23 Lessons From 23 Years…

I’m young.

I’m still in my early 20’s (23 is still early 20’s, right?). The fact that I’m 23 is something I’m still trying to grasp, by the way.

Anyway, even though I don’t remember much of the first five/six years of my life, I have learned a thing or two from the past 17 years of my life. I could list them all, but that would take a really long time. So, since I turned 23, here are 23 things I have learned in life so far:

  1. Treat others how you want to be treated. It’s a simple concept that sometimes is easier said than done, but it is very important. Doing so shows that you know that you’re not alone on this earth and that people have feelings. It’s also a good rule of thumb for whenever you’re wondering how to respond to a situation.
  2. Take care of yourself. You get one body and one life to live. If you want to live a long life, taking care of your body is a huge part of that. You need to take care of yourself mentally, physically, and spiritually. All three are crucial for a healthy self.
  3. Don’t be afraid to put trust in a higher power. For me, that’s God. I believe we are all here for a reason and that life has a purpose. One of my favorite quotes is this:
“Place your hand over your heart. You feel that? It’s called a purpose.”- Unknown. I believe that everything happens for a reason and that we are all a part of something bigger. Sometimes I lay in bed for a few minutes and just think about how I got from Point A to Point B and feel confident that I am in the right place and in the end, I always will be. Having faith isn’t always easy, but it does help push me through the times when I am uncertain of what is next. Life isn’t perfect, but I trust that I have Someone watching over me, always.
  4. Good triumphs bad, every time. No matter what, I promise you that good always wins the fight. Even if it doesn’t seem like it’s going to win, it will. If things are not good, then it’s not the end. Trust that it will always win, and be patient.
  5. You can learn something from everyone. Even if it’s learning what not to do, you’re still learning from someone. Everyone has a story that we can learn from. Everyone has some sort of experience that we can learn from, whether it be good or bad. Be open to learning from people and use it as a textbook in life.
  6. Love yourself. God only made one version of you, therefore, you are literally original and original things have an extreme amount of value. Therefore, you are valued, more than you will ever understand. No is perfect, but at the same time, we all have things about us that are worth loving. A loving heart, a kind soul, a great sense of humor– the list goes on and on. There is nothing wrong with loving yourself. You can be confidence and give yourself credit without being full of yourself.
  7. Laugh. Okay, obviously there are times when you shouldn’t laugh and those are obvious. Other than that, laughter is the best medicine, it connects people, it can make some of the best memories, and it makes you feel really good. Plus, rumor has it the laughter helps you live longer.
  8. Don’t waste your time on hate. I’m not saying that you need to have a passionate love for every person that you meet, but hate won’t get you anywhere. Even if someone really makes you angry, just walk away, living well is the best revenge anyway. But don’t fill your soul with such an ugly thing, no matter what.
  9. Similarly, don’t hold grudges. I have heard it said that holding a grudge is like letting someone live rent free in your head. Chances are, that person is off living their life. It’s not worth being angry over the person. Go live yours, it feels much better. Now, if you need closure, that’s a different story, but don’t hold anger over someone or a situation. Like hate, it’s a waste.
  10. Smile. Regardless of how bad life or the world may seem, there is always something to smile over.
  11. Eat cake. In the words of Kate Spade, “Eat cake for breakfast.” Seriously though, no matter what type: a vegan cake, carrot cake, sponge cake… the list goes on. Cake makes life better. Don’t be afraid to indulge once in a while.
  12. Find a vegetable you love. I am a picky eater, but there are a few veggies I like to snack on. Find some that you love, even if it’s just one or two. Find different ways to incorporate it into your meals and eat it up!
  13. Don’t worry about following trends. Trends comes and go. You can wear something not trending and you can choose not to follow them.
  14. Always choose kindness. Regardless of color, culture, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, age, religion, ect… choose kindness whenever possible. A little kindness can go a long way.
  15. Respect everyone.  Regardless of color, culture, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, age, religion, ect… respect everyone. It doesn’t mean you have to agree with the person, but everyone should be respected.
  16. Read. I don’t care if it’s the nutrition label on a can of soup! It can be a dictionary, a magazine, a comic book, WHATEVER! Reading helps to expand your vocabulary, keeps your mind sharp, takes you away from reality, and brings forth inspiration… although, I’m not sure how inspiring a soup label is but if it works for you, so be it.
  17. Own a pet. Whether it’s a fish or a German Shepard, learn to take care of a pet– it teaches responsibility. If you’re allergic, get a plant. Something. However, pets make great companions.
  18. Take pictures. I know a lot of people who don’t like having their photo taken. However, don’t forget that pictures help you remember some of the best moments in life.
  19. Put your phone down. I know I just said to take photos, but it’s also important to find a balance and put your phone down. You don’t need to share every moment of your life with the world. Try spending a day or two off SnapChat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook and just be. We no longer talk to people face-to-face and it’s so sad 🙁
  20. Ask questions and look for the answers. Your education in life doesn’t end once you graduate from school. Ask questions about the world around you and continue to learn. Don’t be okay with being ignorant! You may learn some wonderful things that can shape you.
  21. Listen to the rain. I’m doing it right now and my goodness, it’s calming. I could fall asleep to the sound of it.
  22. Find a hobby. Find something you enjoy. Even if you’re terrible at it, it’s more important that it brings you happiness. Haters gonna hate!
  23. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Of course you shouldn’t purposely do something that will harm you or those around you, but also realize that we learn from mistakes. Everyone makes them. Don’t be afraid of them.
